What is Puta?
Puta, used as a target cushion in traditional archery, is a target cushion whose outer layer is usually made of leather, cloth or synthetic materials, and whose filling varies depending on the period, and nowadays is made of materials such as EVA instead of cotton. In its most practical form, puta is used today, which does not cause any renewal costs since its outer layer is full of holes when the arrow is shot, and is made of lamination of polyurethane and EVA materials.
It is pear-shaped, with a large circle at the bottom and a small circle at the top. Its width and height are defined by the Traditional Turkish Archery Federation of Turkey as 110 cm wide, 77 cm high and 20 cm thick, but it may vary depending on the area of use. Puta is hung and placed in a wooden puta stand, and there are rings consisting of different points on the surface of the puta. Archers aim to get a high score by hitting these points with their arrows, which vary in difficulty, in competitions called puta races.
Putas are used to improve archers' targeting skills and make their shots more safely. Putas can be used outdoors or indoors and allow archers to shoot from different distances. Archers can improve their technical skills and precision by aiming at different rings of the target. As a result, the puta cushion is an indispensable part of traditional archery and allows archers to improve their targeting skills and make their shots more safely.
What to Consider When Buying a Puta?
It is important that it is of a size and thickness suitable for the archer's purpose. Since the puta should not be used leaning against a wall, the possibility of the arrow protruding behind the tip of the arrow should be considered. The number of cm the arrow's tip will protrude behind the puta depends primarily on the puta thickness and material as well as many parameters such as the type of arrow tip, the speed of the arrow exiting the bow, the weight of the arrow, and the shooting distance. The size of the puta is also important depending on the distance we shoot and our mastery.
